News Brief
The new Student Government Association Executive Officers and Senators were sworn in and officially took office on Monday, April 14. Student Court President Awarial Binns swore in the new Student Government President, Somi Benson-Jaja who then swore in other new executive officers and all new senators. The new SGA will hold office until April 2009. Armstrong Atlantic President, Dr. Thomas Z. Jones was present at the induction ceremony to show appreciation to the outgoing SGA and to challenge the new SGA.

News Brief
The 2007-2008 Student Government Association recognized Dr. Vicki McNeil, Vice President of Student Affairs and Al Harris, Director of Student Activities at the April 14 SGA Meeting. McNeil was presented with flowers recognized for her support to the Student Government. Harris was presented with a glass plaque honoring Harris’ over 30 years of support and serving as the advisor to the Armstrong Atlantic Student Government Association.

News Brief
The Student Government Association unanimously approved a resolution supporting student representation and involvement on Faculty Standing Committees. In Fall 2007, the Armstrong Atlantic Faculty elected to support a Faculty Senate. Currently, all Faculty Standing Committees are currently updating committee bylaws and under those revisions, student representation on those committees has been in jeopardy.

Armstrong has a long tradition of students and faculty working together to create a stronger learning institution. The Student Government hopes through the recommendation through the Resolution passed by the SGA that the Faculty Senate and Faculty Committee Chairs will approve at least one student appointment on the Academic Appeals, Student Success, Honors Advisory, International Programs and Activities, Library, Research and Scholarship, Writing, Planning, Budgeting, and Facilities, Interdisciplinary Studies, and Educational Technology Committees.

News Brief
The 2008 Student Government Elections set a record for voter turnout. Over 1000 students participated in the Student Government Elections for the 2008-2009 year, more than ever in a SGA Election. Britney Wynn, candidate for Secretary set a record for most votes received for an individual candidate, receiving 1012 votes. Election results for all races with the exception of the Treasurer’s seat were certified on Friday, March 7. There will be a new election for Treasurer which will take place April 8 at 9:00am through April 10 at 9:00am. Voting once again will take place on cove.armstrong.edu

News Brief
The Student Government Association approved its 2008-2009 budget proposed by the Finance Committee at its February 25 meeting and was signed by SGA President Kaitlen Fulp and Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Vicki McNeil. The budget received final approval from Armstrong Atlantic President, Dr. Thomas Z. Jones on March 6. The total Student Government Budget for the 2008-2009 year totaled $567,200. Detailed information about the budget will be available on the SGA Website in the near future.

News Brief
The Student Government Association Community Service Committee hosted a American Red Cross Blood Drive on Tuesday, February 12. "Our most recent blood drive on February 12th was one of our most successful drives to date. No doubt the recent tragedy at the Dixie Crystals sugar plant led to an increased number of donors, primarily first timers. From that though we can find a bright spot, as first time donors are important since those individuals obviously increase the pool of regular donors," said Community Services Committee Chair, Kyle Godfrey. The Armstrong Atlantic Student Government Association was reconigized by the American Red Cross for exceeding its donation goal by 139%.

News Brief
The Student Government in partnership with University Police held a Campus Safety Walk on Tuesday, February 5. At the walk, students, administration, faculty and staff completed a walk throughout the campus and housing communities to locate and determine areas on campus which need safety improvements which mostly consisted of overgrown landscaping, light bulbs that need replacement, and areas in need of more lighting. "The walk is an eye-opening event for all. It really revealed a lot of the areas that we need to work and improve throughout the campus to ensure safety for all students, employees and visitors to the Armstrong Campus. The walk was a great collaborative effort of students, the administration, and staff members," said SGA Student Services Committee Chair, Chris Nowicki. The findings of the report were turned over to the Plant Operations Department, University Police, and the administration to create a plan to begin to fix the safety concerns. News Brief
In late Fall Semester, the Student Government Association conducted a Student Services Survey to students on campus. Student Government surveyed Security Services, Dining Services, Technology Services, Financial Aid Services, and Academic Advisement. The Student Services Committee will take the results to officials in the appropriate departments to discuss the results and what can be done to improve the student services that will benefit all students. "The feedback we received from the students is vital to the work that SGA does. We take the concerns of students seriously, as they have entrusted us to serve as their voice," said SGA Student Services Committee Chair, Chris Nowicki. To view the survey results click here.

News Brief
The Student Government Association visited the Mercer University in Macon and University of West Georgia in Carrollton on November 16 and 17. On the campus of Mercer, members of SGA visited and toured the campus’ dining facilities and discussed the dining services with the Aramark Food Services Director. At the University of West Georgia, members of SGA met with the Student Center Facility Director Linda Picklesimer and toured the facility. Members of SGA toured the facilities at both campuses to visit and see what services and ideas to be implemented into the new Student Center to be constructed at Armstrong Atlantic.


News Brief
Dr. Vicki McNeil, Vice President for Student Affairs presented to the Student Government Association at its November 19 meeting. In her presentation she presented the University Master Plan. Dr. McNeil focused upon the new student center and brought the student’s recommendations for what to be implemented into the new student center and discussed the costs of the new building and renovation of the current MCC Building.

Dr. McNeil presented the new additions in the new center would be a ballroom, 200 seat theatre, new bookstore, new dining cafeteria, Student Government Offices, Campus Union Board Offices, lounge space, and game room.

The new projected cost for the new student center and renovation of the MCC Building is $16 million dollars. Dr. McNeil asked for the SGA support of a $85 student center fee to fund the new building. Since the building is not an academic building, state monies cannot be used to fund student life space.

Dr. McNeil also reported on her proposal to the University Fees Committee for a $6 per semester increase in the current Recreation Fee which funds the Student Recreation Center. This fee would be used to fund an expansion of the Student Recreation Center which would include a Racquetball Court, additional restrooms, and offices.


News Brief
The Student Government Association approved a Resolution supporting a Student Life Center Fee of no more than $90 per semester. The fee, if approved by the University Fee Committee will then go to the University System Board of Regents at a spring meeting for final approval. If approved by the Board of Regents, the fee would be implemented immediately and would be used to fund the new Student Center which will open in Fall 2009.

News Brief
The Student Government Association approved a Resolution supporting Google Applications as the new e-mail service provider for all AASU Students. The Resolution will now go to CIS for further review and final decision. If Google Applications is approved by CIS, a full implementation of the new student e-mail service could be available in Fall 2008.

News Brief
The Student Government Association Community Service Committee sponsored a blood drive on October 30, 2007 collecting 33 units of blood for the American Red Cross. SGA sponsored a cookout for all donors. Donors were also entered into a raffle win a fall getaway trip sponsored by the American Red Cross. The next blood drive will be Tuesday, February 12.

Armstrong Atlantic State University Dr. Thomas Z. Jones attended the October 29 Student Government Meeting. Dr. Jones discussed currently issues, changes, and developments taking place within the university. Dr. Jones was available to answer questions that members of SGA had about university issues and what is currently taking place within the university. Dr. Jones thanked the members of SGA for their work and services to the students and to the university.

SGA President Kaitlen Fulp recently attended the Student Advisory Council (SAC) fall meeting at Valdosta University. SAC is comprised of all student government President’s from the public colleges and universities in Georgia. Fulp serves on the Follow Up Committee and reported that her committee along with SAC is strongly working with the Board of Regents to improve academic advisement and is currently one of the top priorities. SGA President Kaitlen Fulp vetoed $1,000 that was approved by the SGA Senate for the Fed Challenge Team. The Fed Challenge Team requested funding from SGA to attend training for competition in New York City and to attend competition in Charlotte, North Carolina. “Participation in the Fed Challenge Team was not open to all students as outlined in criteria No.1 of the Student Handbook. With all of this in mind, my desire is to do right by the entire student body,” said Fulp.

News Brief
The Student Government Association visited Augusta State University, on Saturday, September 22 to tour the Augusta State Student Center. The university is in the planning phases of the construction of a new student center. Members of the SGA visited the new center at Augusta State to get ideas of what they would like seen implemented into the new student center at AASU. If fee funding is approved through the SGA, university, and Board of Regents, the construction of a new student center would begin in Fall 2008. The SGA is planning to visit Mercer University and University of West Georgia in November to visit their student centers.


News Brief
The Student Government Association approved a Resolution supporting a new ID Card Fee of $15. The fee will now go to the University Fee Committee for approval in November. If approved by the University Fee Committee, it must then be approved by the Board of Regents in April before implementation. If approved by the Board of Regents the fee would begin as soon as Fall 2008. The new ID Card Fee would support and fund a new ID Card System on campus. Currently the use of the ID Card is limited and the new card would expand to entrances to university buildings, vending machine purchases, laundry facilities, university dining, as well as other added services. As well as the expanded new service the fee would also pay for a full time employee to manage the new ID services.
